TrailLeaf (“the app”) is a living animal Journal and collection experience. This policy explains what we collect, why, and how photos may be processed by third-party AI to suggest species when you Snap.

Information we collect
- Explorer profile — display name, titles, cosmetics, and progress needed to run your Journal. Linked accounts (when you use them) add identifiers to restore progress across devices.
- Photos you Snap — images you capture or upload for identification and your Journal.
- Location (optional) — when you allow it, approximate or precise location may be used for trail clues and discovery context. You can deny location; core Snap still works with reduced map features.
- Steps (optional) — a daily step total from the phone’s pedometer, saved to your explorer so it restores on sign-in. We do not record a route, GPS trail, or continuous location for step counting. You can deny motion/activity access; Snap still works.
- Usage & device data — app version, crash logs, and basic product analytics (if enabled) to keep the app reliable.
- Purchases — processed by Apple (or Google) In‑App Purchase; we receive entitlements (e.g. Snap packs) rather than full card details.
AI and third-party photo processing
When you Snap, your photo may be sent to our servers and to a third-party AI vision provider (currently via OpenRouter and underlying model providers) to suggest a species match. Suggestions are not guaranteed to be correct — you Approve or Discard. Do not Snap photos of people or private documents you do not want processed.
How we use information
- Run identification and store verified discoveries in your journal
- Sync progress when you link an account
- Show a daily step count (an integer total, not a map of where you walked)
- Grant Snap allowances and paid entitlements
- Show soft “trail pulse” signals (anonymous presence and reaction chips) so exploration feels shared without a public feed
- Improve reliability, prevent abuse, and respond to support requests
Trail pulse (ambient social)
TrailLeaf may show coarse, privacy-preserving trail signals — not a social feed and not exact pins of where you Snap:
- Coarse location cells — when location is available, we bucket finds into large grid cells (about ~2 km) and ISO-week windows. We do not publish your exact capture coordinates in trail pulse.
- Anonymous presence counts — other explorers may see that “a few explorers” verified a species, only after a small threshold so a single find is not uniquely identifying.
- Soft “ghost” hints — map overlays may say someone found a species nearby without exposing cell coordinates or who found it.
- Reaction chips — optional chip tallies (e.g. heart / wow) on species you verified. These are anonymous aggregate counts, not a profile timeline.
Trade Board, public shares, and user content
Explorers can post wildlife photos to the Trade Board and create public share cards. Those photos are user-generated. Other explorers can Report a listing or share in the app (or on the share page). We review reports in our admin tools and take down listings or unpublish shares that violate these terms. You can also Block an explorer so their Trade Board offers no longer appear for you.
Sharing
We share data with service providers who help us operate TrailLeaf (hosting, object storage, AI inference, analytics/crash reporting). We do not sell your personal information. Public shares you choose to create should not include exact coordinates unless you explicitly enable that. Trail pulse signals are aggregate and thresholded; they are not a live location feed.
Retention
We keep account, journal, and daily step totals while your account is active. You may request deletion (see below). Backups and logs may persist for a limited period for security and operations.
Your choices
- Deny camera, photos, location, or motion/activity (step count) in system settings
- Discard identification suggestions without saving
- Report a Trade Board listing or public share in the app, or Block an explorer so their offers no longer appear
- Request account / data deletion via Forget me, or clear local progress from Profile in the app
Children
TrailLeaf is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). If you believe we have collected data from a child, contact us and we will delete it.
International transfers
Our providers may process data in the United States or other countries. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards offered by those providers.
Changes
We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date will change; material changes will be noted on this page or in the app.
